Top 10 things to do in Portugal

Portugal

Bordered by Spain and the picturesque Atlantic Ocean, Portugal is the perfect holiday destination all year round.

Portugal is a country.

3000 hours of sunshine per year and 850 kms of splendid beaches on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean, Portugal is the perfect holiday destination all year round.

A country with rich history and bright future, Portugal has the oldest borders in Europe. Lots of leisure activities and a unique cultural heritage, here tradition and modernity blend together in a perfect harmony.

Portugal is situated at the south-west point of Europe and also includes the Madeira and Azores archipelagos in the Atlantic Ocean. The area of Mainland Portugal is 88,889 km2 and it has 832 km of Atlantic coast and a 1,215 km border with Spain.

The climate in Portugal varies considerably from one region to another and is influenced by the relief, latitude and proximity to the sea, which offers mild winters, especially in the Algarve. In the north, winters are colder, still temperatures are warmer compared to the rest of Europe. Snowfall can be seen in the Serra da Estrela mountains, the highest point in mainland Portugal (1,991 m). The summers are hot and dry, especially in the inland areas. There are often warm, sunny days in autumn.

The population of Portugal equals to about 10 million. In Lisbon we find the greatest density, where about 1.9 million people live. The second largest city in Portugal is Porto (Oporto). As a whole, most Portuguese prefer living in the coastal areas, because of the better living conditions there.

Portuguese is the 5th most spoken language in the world, but you can be calm if you are able to communicate in English, French and Spanish, because most of the Portuguese people are able as well.

Portugal is a developed country with an advanced economy, high living standards and high-quality infrastructures, ranking 2nd in the quality of the road network and 11th overall, according to the Global Competitiveness Report. It is one of the world's most globalized, peaceful and responsive nations. It is a member of the United Nations, European Union, Eurozone, OECD, NATO, WTO, Schengen Area, and the Community of Portuguese Language Countries. Portugal was among the first countries to abolish capital punishment in 1867. On 31 May 2010, Portugal became the sixth country in Europe and the eighth country in the world to legally recognize same-sex marriage on the national level.

Portugal also received international attention for being the first country in the world to fully decriminalize the usage of all drugs in 2001.
